Playa Montelimar is one of the few exclusive beaches in Nicaragua. To access this beach by land, the only way is through the luxurious Barceló Montelimar hotel.
It is the most famous of the beaches of San Rafael del Sur and home to the first large modern resort in the country. The beach as such has numerous palm trees, fine sand, a good enough swell to practice water sports, and very good security due to the exclusivity of the place.
A little bit of Montelimar's history
During the time of President Anastasio Somoza, the area where the hotel is currently built belonged to multiple families of German origin.
But, as Somoza liked the beauty of this beach and the whole area in particular, he decided to declare war on Germany during World War II. By making this declaration, the German families had to leave the country, abandoning these lands.
Once the territory was cleared, the government expropriated these lands. President Somoza at that time decided to build a beautiful mansion. A site that is now part of the casino area of the current hotel.
As a curious fact: Nicaragua and Germany never confronted each other. The plans were only to take the land from the Germans. However, the German government, upon receiving the declaration of war from Nicaragua, decided to send a tank to the country whose message was "Now you can declare war on us", mocking the fact that Nicaragua did not have the military power to confront the German troops.
How to get to Montelimar Beach?
Montelimar is only one hour away from the capital. By private vehicle, there are two ways to get there.
One is to take the Carretera Vieja a Leon and turn towards the beaches at the junction marked by signs (there is a huge Montelimar sign), continue on this road until you reach a stop, where you must turn right and continue for a few minutes until you reach a junction near the beach, where there are signs indicating the way.
The other way is by the Carretera Sur: after El Crucero you will find a road junction with a monument, where you must turn right towards San Rafael del Sur; after passing the town you will reach the road junction near the beaches with signs.
If you travel by public transportation you can take buses to Pochomil and Masachapa at the Israel Lewites Market terminal. These leave every day and at different times.
The bus ends its trip a little before the beaches. When you get off you must take a cab, a moto-taxi, or a caponera (bicycle cab) to get to the hotel Barceló Montelimar.
